If you had a great dinner somewhere and you tell your friends about the dinner, and you also tell them about the amazing atmosphere and lovely food but you do not tell the name of the restaurant, how do you think it would sound? Well it would sound exactly like submitting your final research paper without providing suitable citations. Citation helps your readers in the finding the source of your content and research. It makes your content authentic and convincing. There are many types of citation styles present but today I will teach you about MLA citation.
What is MLA?
MLA which normally stands for Modern Language Association is one of the most common citation styles used internationally. The First thing which you need to do before you get started with the citation part, is that you need to find out whether you are working on a book, an article, any electronic or just some research paper.
Types of Products
There is specific citation style followed for each product type, let’s take a look:
Web Page: Last name, First name. “Title of web page”. Title of web site. Name of publisher of site. Date site was created. Medium of publication. Date of access.
Journal Article: Last name, first name. “Title of Article in Title Case” Title of Journal Volume. Issue Year: Pages. Medium of Publication.
Book: Last name, first name. Title of Book. Publication location: Publisher, year of publication. Medium of publication.
There are a few things which you must keep in mind while working on MLA format. Indentation of subsequent and second lines for every entry is very important. Also, you must alphabetize the lines and entries as per the first section. Another feature is to center align the heading the “Works Cited” on the top of the page.
Now comes the part when you have to do in-text citation. Now, you must add your in-text citations whenever you summarize, paraphrase or quote for something. You can also use the name of the name of the author in the running text. Let me share an example with you:
Aniston wrote, “Their eyes were quiet and inward, and their eyes, too, were lucid at night” (125).
This example shows how you can add author’s name and page number in the end.
MLA Helping Guides
Gone are the days when you couldn’t find the solution to things, you would either have to ask your instructor or your friend for how to do something specific. But now you can easily find anything online. Talking about the MLA format, you can always get the MLA handbook for writers of research paper from your librarian. There are other guides available online for example Purdue OWL MLA Resources and Bedford/St. Martin’s Research and Documentation Online Handbook etc.
If you follow the above mentioned steps to learn MLA format, you will learn it pretty quickly. This guide comes in handy; you can’t even learn it yourself but also share it with your fellow student.
