Improve Your Writing with Transition Words

With the help of good transition words you can guide the reader thought to thought. These words enable you to express your ideas clearly and in a meaningful way, and make your content easy for the reader to understand. If you think of writing as a journey then these words play a role of sign boards in your journey. The words will keep the reader moving in the right direction like a traveler. Without the transition words, the reader will be lost in the plethora of jumbled up words. Let me share some effective transition words and how you can use them while you write.

Examples

There are dozens of transition words and phrases, let’s take a look at a few of their categories:

  • Addition: These types of words add one thought into another.
  • Sequence: These types of words show order of ideas in space and time.
  • Contrast: These types of words show the difference between 2 ideas.
  • Comparison: These types of words show the similarity of 2 ideas
  • Conclusion: These types of words carry the idea to the end.
  • Reason: These types of words show a reasonable connection between 2 ideas.

How to Use Transition Words

Now that you have the basic types of transition words, let me tell how you can use these words in your content. Here is an example of a paragraph with no transition words in it.

“Alice was bitten by a dog when she was a kid. Alice spent many days at the hospital improving. She still has a scar on her right leg where the dog bit her. Alice is afraid of dogs. “

Now let me add a couple of transition words in it to see how it sounds now.

“Alice was bitten by a dog when she was a kid. As a result, she spent many days at the hospital improving. To this day, she has a scar on her right leg where the dog bit her and she is afraid of dogs”

As a result: it shows some reason for Alice’s stay at the hospital.

To this day: Shows that the time has passed and it also shows the sequence of actions.

Do not overuse the Transition Words

I have reviewed many papers in my life and what I have noticed is that mostly writers make this one common mistake; they overuse the transition words in their papers. Words like “therefore”, however” or “moreover” are frequently used throughout the content which should be avoided. Instead of using spicy and long tail words, try using mild and short words.  Let me share a few examples:

And should be used instead of “In addition”

But should be used instead of “However”

So should be used instead of “Therefore”

Also should be used instead of “Moreover”

Though I recommend using spicy long tail words in your academic work but still make sure you cover the purpose of your topic. Anything that is excessive used can cause trouble, so be very careful while choosing the right words.
